The standard driven rod or copper clad rod consists of an 8 to 10 foot length of steel with a 5 to 10 mil coating of copper. Once the rod is driven down far enough the tool will hammer from top to finish driving rod under grade. However if the end of the ground rod is mushrooming you might need to use an advanced driven rod that is installed with a standard drill hammer.
