You can attach it to the edges around the perimeter or flat on the face of the door. Trim of any type makes cabinet doors appear expensive. I briefly considered making completely new doors but as you might expect that can cost quite a bit. See the picture below for the before and after sanding.

What i ended up doing is transforming my flat doors into shaker style cabinets by simply adding trim to the doors. So what looked like this before. After adding the trim pieces to all the cabinet doors sand the edges of the trim to make everything even.
