I am thinking of building some kind of loft in the back part of the barn to add 2nd floor storage.

I always recommend using reinforcing in all pole barn floors. Or they plan a new post frame building with an idea of a future second floor being incorporated. Adding a second story is your chance to get creative just make sure you factor your creative ideas into plans before construction begins.
