Set aside at least a four day chunk of time for the basic framing because once the roof s open you ve got to keep at it until the dormer is weathertight. Plan on a big time commitment as well. Hipped roof windows are built in a similar fashion except that the roof slopes down in four directions from the center peak and overhangs the side and front walls. Shed roof windows slope down from the back to the front with the roof overhanging only the front wall.

If the dormer is built above living space rather than over an attic or if you re converting attic space to living space then it provides much needed natural light. Projects this large and complex are expensive especially when you add in elements like windows. You can use a dormer to add another window to your home and break up the monotonous appearance of your roof or to add another whole level to your home. Top half opens like a traditional roof window.

Terrace a door to the outside. Dormers are wonderful spots for a reading nook kids play area dressing area and other uses where extra light is a bonus. The window is installed within that gable.
